Biden Bowl, Any Takers? Italy's PM to Sell International Gifts for Good Cause
Getting rid of unneeded presents could be seen as a little discourteous – except if it's done in the proper manner.
A Charitable Clear-Out
The leader of Italy, Giorgia Meloni, is set to sell around 270 items bestowed upon her by world leaders during her travels. This unusual assortment is said to contain items such as a chainsaw-wielding statuette of Argentina's leader Javier Milei and a pair of exotic blue snake-skin shoes with gold heels.
These items, combined, are valued at around €800,000. The plan is to put up for sale in a public auction by a Italian fine art auction house. The specific date remains to be announced, but the aim is to conduct the sale before Christmas, with the revenue going to a selection of charitable causes.
Storage Room Treasures
These gifts are said to be stored in a secure area on the third floor of Palazzo Chigi. Sources state that Meloni furthermore considering auction off gifts received by her preceding prime ministers that have been gathering dust for years.
The full gift list has not yet been disclosed, but partial details was gleaned earlier this year when a comprehensive document of all declared gifts was reviewed by officials. The question centered on whether a legal value limit was being honored. By law, a prime minister cannot take home presents valued above €300.
An International Array of Presents
Among the items:
- A woven wrap from the leader of Albania, allegedly presented to Meloni for her birthday during a meeting abroad.
- A traditional Kerala dress from the Indian leader.
- A case of jewelry from the Slovakian president.
- A fine china tea service and a selection of wines from Hungary's leader.
- A pottery dish from the former US president.
- A tablet from the leader of Ukraine.
- Paintings from Moldova.
- An assortment including makeup, a board, and numerous carpets received during trips to Libya and other Arab nations.
"Possibly the oddest gifts were the statuette from Milei and the blue python skin shoes," reports suggest.
Political Context
The prime minister has received praise, mostly from her allies, with garnering support from international counterparts and making Italy as a prominent force on the global scene once again.
The forthcoming sale symbolizes a novel approach to manage the protocol gifts that are collected during a leader's tenure.
