Chicago White Sox Land Power Bat Munetaka Murakami on a Lucrative Two-Year Agreement.
In a notable move for their overhauling roster, the South Side team have officially added slugger Munetaka Murakami, completing a $34 million contract for the accomplished player.
Contract Details and Added Benefits
The agreement grants a seven-figure signing bonus, issued within 30 days, in addition to salaries of $16M for the upcoming season and $17M for the 2027 year.
Notably, Murakami's final-year pay is subject to escalators based on performance achievements in 2026:
- $1 million for being named the MVP award.
- $500,000 for finishing in the top three in MVP voting.
- $250,000 for ranking in the top ten.
- An identical bonus for earning the ROY honor.
The agreement also stipulates that he cannot be sent to the farm system without his permission and makes him a free agent at the end of the contract. Extra provisions include a team-provided interpreter and airfare between Japan and the U.S..
Compensation and Historical Context
As part of the signing, Chicago must pay a posting fee of roughly $6.58 million to the Tokyo Yakult Swallows, Murakami's former team in Japan's NPB. The Yakult organization get a 15% cut of fifteen percent triggered performance bonuses.
