We are checking video footage and photographs shared this morning that show the aftermath of a reported car bomb explosion that Russian officials state fatally injured a senior soldier in Moscow.
Officials in Russia confirmed that Lt Gen Fanil Sarvarov was inside the car that exploded and that he succumbed of his wounds. An investigation is under way.
The initial step to verify the site from which the images originated relied on social media reports saying the explosion happened on Yasenevaya Ulitsa in the southern part of the Russian capital.
Our analysis employed street-view imagery on Google Maps and the Russian search engine Yandex to match the distinctive yellow hue of a adjacent residential complex seen in the video.
Locating other structures, streetlights and the road configuration verified where the footage were taken.
We also checked that the videos were recent and that the visuals had not undergone manipulated.
