Jets Head Coach Aaron Glenn Optimistic Kris Boyd Will Recover Fully After NYC Incident
New York Jets coach Aaron Glenn mentioned that he has been in contact with defensive back Kris Boyd and believes the athlete will be OK after being shot in central New York in the early hours of Sunday.
Glenn noted that Boyd, currently in the hospital, was “positive” during a recent discussion.
“That’s what eases my mind, is that he’s feeling positive,” Glenn said Wednesday. “His wife and his kid, they are holding up and he is expected to recover fully.”
It remained unclear when Boyd might be released the medical facility, where he has been listed as serious yet stable.
“Not certain at the moment,” the coach said. “However, I can share, just talking to him, he seemed very positive. Furthermore, that’s what gives me comfort, that he feels like that and his words reflect that optimism.”
New York police shared surveillance images earlier this week of a suspect in the attack on the player. A motive for the shooting is still being looked into and authorities said it’s not clear if Boyd was the intended victim. There were no additional victims according to reports.
The attack took place just after 2am on Sunday morning near Madison Square Garden and the iconic square. Boyd, twenty-nine, was transported to a medical center after being shot in the abdomen, as reported. The assailant escaped.
Glenn said Boyd has been in his thoughts “constantly” since he heard about the shooting. Glenn added that Boyd and his wife recently welcomed a baby.
“My initial concern, he recently became a father,” Glenn noted. “I thought of his spouse, I’m thinking about his kid and my priority is his well-being. Those thoughts dominated my thinking.
“There’s a process to this, which I won’t get into, but I’m happy at the fact that he’s going to come out of this thing really, really well.”
Boyd hasn’t played in the present campaign, after joining the team, after his season was cut short due to injury on mid-August with a shoulder issue that involved surgical repair.
He joined the Jets as a new signing in March and was projected as a key part of a revamped special teams unit under Glenn and special teams coordinator the special teams coach. However, he got hurt during preseason drills on early August and was taken away on a cart.
Boyd has stayed involved with the squad all season long while healing from his surgery.
“He remains involved with our activities,” Glenn said. “Certainly, he is a regular at our matches. His commitment is total. As one of the league’s best on special teams, he has been instrumental in guiding others.”
Boyd, a Texas native, played his first four seasons with the Vikings after his selection in the later rounds by Minnesota out of UT in the 2019 draft. He joined the Arizona Cardinals in 2023 and moved to Houston’s squad after that. Boyd signed a one-year contract worth $1.6m with the Jets in the spring.
