Offspring of Former South African President Zuma Rejects Terror-Related Allegations as Trial Begins
The child of ex- South African President Zuma has denied all charges to terror-linked accusations at the start of her legal proceedings in the port city of Durban city.
Zuma-Sambudla, forty-three, is being charged over comments she published on online platforms several years back during fatal demonstrations in South Africa that followed the arrest of her parent.
A period of anarchy in various areas of the country in mid-2021, including looting and intentional burning, caused at least 300 killed and caused damage worth an estimated $2.8bn (£2.2 billion).
Zuma-Sambudla has been alleged of encouraging this violence and faces charges of incitement to commit terror acts and public violence.
History of the Proceedings
The demonstrations were centered in the areas of Gauteng region and KwaZulu-Natal province and were triggered by the former president's detention for disobeying a legal directive to testify at an probe into allegations of corruption while he was holding office.
The defendant has always rejected the charges against her, with her attorney in the past labelling the prosecution's legal argument as unsubstantiated.
She has also consistently claimed the accusations against her were an effort to settle political scores with her parent after he established his own party and ran against the ANC.
Support and Case Arguments
This was reinforced by the Zuma foundation, which stated the case was an "power abuse" and a "systematic campaign" of "political and family-related targeting" against the previous head of state and his family.
A few of followers from her group, her party, turned up outside the KwaZulu-Natal high court, while her parent and other party leaders were present at the hearings inside.
The defense has stated that the testimony presented by the state is inadequate and does not have substantial grounds for a guilty verdict.
Main Aspects of the Trial
- Digital posts from the past form the core of the state's evidence
- Fatal demonstrations in 2021 resulted in major casualties and financial damage
- The defendant confronts multiple allegations of incitement to unrest
- Judicial hearings are projected to continue for multiple days
The legal proceedings continues as both sides present their arguments before the judicial authority in what is projected to be a carefully observed judicial process with substantial policy consequences for South Africa.
