Plans for Putin-Trump Meeting Postponed Days Following Budapest Talks Proposed

Currently exist "no arrangements" for US President President Trump to confer with Russia's Vladimir Putin "in the immediate future", a White House official has declared.

This past week the US president indicated he and the Kremlin leader would hold talks in Hungary's capital soon to examine the Ukraine conflict.

A initial discussion between America's top diplomat Marco Rubio and his Russian counterpart Foreign Minister Lavrov was scheduled to occur recently - but the White House clarified the two had had a "positive" conversation and that a meeting was not "necessary".

The White House did not share further information on why the talks had been postponed.

Earlier Events

The US president had raised the possibility of a Budapest summit via telephone with Putin, a day before meeting Ukrainian President President Zelensky in the Oval Office.

Certain accounts indicated his talks with Zelensky had been a "contentious discussion", with those familiar claiming Trump had pushed him to relinquish significant territories of Ukraine's east as part of a settlement with Moscow.

Nevertheless, on this week Trump supported a ceasefire proposal endorsed by Kyiv and European leaders to freeze the hostilities on the current front line.

"Leave it as is where it stands," he remarked.

Russia has frequently resisted against pausing the current line of contact.

The Russian government was solely focused on "long-term, sustainable peace", Russia's foreign minister said on Tuesday, indicating that freezing the front line would merely represent a temporary ceasefire.

Political Perspectives

The "fundamental issues" of the conflict needed to be addressed, the Russian diplomat said, using Moscow's terminology for a range of extensive requirements that include the acceptance of complete Moscow control over the Donbas as well as the demilitarisation of the country – a unacceptable proposition for Kyiv and its EU supporters.

Zelensky commented conversations concerning the current lines were the "start of negotiations" but that Russia was "doing everything" to prevent dialogue.

He further commented the sole subject that could make Moscow "become engaged" was that of the supply of distance-capable munitions to Ukraine.

Strategic Factors

Putin's unplanned conversation with Trump last Thursday occurred before rumors that the US was considering delivering long-range Tomahawk missiles to Ukrainian forces that could possibly hit Russian territory.

Zelensky asserted it was the Tomahawks issue that had forced Russia to participate in talks. The conversation concerning the missiles had turned out to be a "strong investment" in negotiations", he added.
