Severe Downpours Exacerbate Conditions for Evacuated Gazans, Officials Alert
Persistent rains over the last seven days have worsened the already dire living conditions of the many hundreds of thousands of uprooted Palestinians in the region, according to aid agencies.
"Terrible" Weather Creates Severe Dangers
A representative detailed the previous night's conditions as "horrendous", with downpours so intense that up to 15cm (6in) of water gathered on the streets.
"Last night was truly difficult for the families. The storms were so strong... And the gales were so powerful," said the spokesperson.
Authorities voice significant anxiety that children residing in temporary structures in soaked attire will fall victim to hypothermia and other sicknesses.
Fatalities and Widespread Destruction
The health ministry have confirmed that one baby has passed away from the cold and at least 11 other people have died in structural failures due to the storms.
Other reports put a greater death toll. Authorities said that numerous homes had fully given way and dozens had been partly destroyed.
- Roughly 55,000 families harmed by rains.
- More than 40 official safe spaces severely flooded.
- Many people compelled to relocate again.
Relief Operations Seen as Inadequate
Groups have stepped up deliveries of tarpaulins, bedding and clothing following the halt in hostilities began, but they emphasize there is still not enough aid reaching those in need.
"Agencies are working relentlessly to deliver that relief and to allocate it, but the size of the needs is so immense that we still have many thousands of individuals and minors who are really suffering nightly," cautioned one representative.
Ongoing Concerns and Truce Plans
The subsequent part of the truce involves arrangements for the reconstruction of Gaza, along with future administration, the withdrawal of personnel, and other provisions.
Relief groups have highlighted the imperative for "expanded and ongoing relief to respond to immediate and future needs."
The war was sparked by an assault in late 2023. Later actions have resulted in a significant number of fatalities in the region, based on health ministry data.
