The Contents of the Case Henry Unlocks in the Hit Series?
During the bulk of season 5 of the popular Netflix show, the young Holly Wheeler and Max find themselves trapped inside a mental fortress built from the recollections of Henry Creel. Their mission for freedom in the pivotal sixth episode leads them to experience a life-altering moment from Henry's early years—an event that could contain the secret to his downfall once and for all.
Heads Up: This article reveals crucial plot points for the second part of the final season.
A Journey Into the Mine Shaft
After locating Max in the world dubbed Camazotz, Max reveals she is taking refuge in a cave that Henry is terrified of. A clever observation a spyglass pilfered from Henry's old home lets Holly see that the true terror lies outside of the cave. By aligning her view through the cap, she and Max suddenly fall into a subterranean passage.
There, they witness a young, eight-year-old Henry come across an injured and paranoid man. As the boy offers aid, the man reacts violently, wounding the boy in the hand. In a desperate act of self-defense, Henry ends the threat with a rock. "Was this the turning point?" Holly wonders aloud. The answer is affirmative, but the act went deeper than a fight for life.
Similar to other plot points in volume 2, the full story behind the encounter is detailed in the stage play Stranger Things: The First Shadow.
The Philadelphia Experiment and Secret Science
This backstory explains the legendary naval test, which allegedly sent a warship into a dimension later called the Abyss. The ship was attacked, and the sole survivor was the ship's commander, who returned in a catatonic condition with an altered blood type.
The captain's son, the future Dr. Brenner, attempted to recreate this dimensional breach in remote Nevada. But a disloyal lab worker pilfered lab samples to hand over to the Soviets, who were keen to start their parallel research. That traitor in the cavern is that employee.
So, What's in the Case?
Considering what is revealed about Brenner's work, the case would assuredly have samples of Captain Brenner's infected blood. As shown, Henry is bleeding from his hand. Exposure likely occurred upon opening the case, leading to the origin of his telekinetic gifts—traits he would inadvertently transfer to the test subjects Brenner would experiment on.
Alternatively, the container could have held strange particles that eventually found its way to Hawkins Laboratory, where it maintains the stability of the parallel world. *The First Shadow* reveals that Henry somehow wound up in the Abyss, coming back 12 hours later as a different person. Throughout the play, he fights the control of a dark entity, similar to how Will Byers was possessed by the shadow monster in an earlier season.
Confronting Terror
Henry's enduring terror associated with the mine highlights how profoundly traumatic the incident was for him. While he controls the collective consciousness and attempts to pull the Abyss into Hawkins, a piece of the scared boy still exists. Vecna uses fear, and the series is building toward a final confrontation between the monster and Will, who has deliberately faced his greatest terrors to gain strength.
This journey has effectively disarmed Vecna. Crucially, Will now is aware of what Vecna himself fears, which could provide a critical advantage in the ultimate battle that awaits.
