The network's Leading New Show of This Year Gets a Significant Extension for an Additional Two Seasons.

In October of last year, Adult Swim welcomed back its quirky hit, Smiling Friends. However, shortly thereafter, the channel introduced a fresh animated series with a strikingly different tone. Haha, You Clowns proved to be heartwarming and calm, reminiscent of a cartoon version of a laid-back talk show. During a period often characterized by cynicism, this show's earnestness found an audience and helped it become a breakout hit.

A Two-Season Greenlight

On December 18th, Adult Swim made a major announcement: Haha, You Clowns has been renewed for two more seasons. This provides showrunner Joe Cappa ample opportunity to further explore the world of the Campbell family. The series follows three polite teenage brothers whose primary trait is their deep love for their single father, with Cappa providing the voices for all four central characters.

"I am incredibly thankful to the fans of the show who welcomed the series and helped it grow," stated Cappa. "It's thrilling that I get to continue exploring the Campbell household for seasons to come."

A President's Endorsement

Accompanying the news commendation from Adult Swim president Michael Ouweleen, who called the series as "radically heartfelt and uniquely eerie." He specifically highlighted the fans who embraced the show and championed its uniquely offbeat sensibility.

"All of you showed up for this new show, rooted for it on social media, and grew it week over week so we could greenlight not one, but two more seasons," commented Ouweleen. "In the words: 'You are strong! You are loved!'"

A Comforting Counterpoint

Upon its debut, Haha, You Clowns was praised as "a wholesome alternative" to more cynical adult animated fare. There’s something surprisingly comfy about watching this charming family go about their daily lives.

At the time, creator Joe Cappa shared his goal to evolve comedy past its long-running cynical streak. He attributed this trend to various cultural shifts.

“There's this level of irony that we are trapped in,” noted Cappa. “It feels as if we have to know we’re the smartest person in the room when we're watching stuff. I feel like we've been doing this for a decade, and we just have to laugh at something different now. The genre needs to change.”

The Path Forward

Now, with Haha, You Clowns set to continue, Cappa may well be part of that change he described. If nothing else, the renewal ensures audiences a little more time to enjoy the gentle humor of the endearing Campbell clan.

The first season's conclusion of Haha, You Clowns is scheduled to air on December 21st. The complete first season is available for streaming on HBO Max.
