The Young Spinner Makes Surprise Inclusion in English Test Series Squad
England have chosen a twelve-player selection just 48 hours before the opening Test match, with the 22-year-old spinner securing a surprise place.
Bashir's inclusion suggests that the visiting team will delay until the day of the first Test to determine whether Perth Stadium conditions favor a pace-heavy attack or the inclusion of a spinner.
Both pace bowlers are included in the selected squad, showing there are no concerns about either fast bowler's condition.
Gus Atkinson and Brydon Carse complete the bowling group, with the latter expected to miss out if the spinner makes the starting XI.
Ground Conditions Favor Pace Bowlers
The England coach had been anticipated to choose an all-seam attack on a ground that has staged five previous Tests.
During these games, 134 wickets have fallen to seamers, with only a small number to spin bowling.
Of those spin dismissals, Australia’s Nathan Lyon has claimed the bulk, while overseas slow bowlers combined have just a handful.
On a ground known for its speed and carry, and whose curator, the pitch preparer, pledged that these characteristics are “permanent and not going to change,” a team loaded with fast bowlers is still the more likely choice.
Spin Options Considered
There had been speculation that the all-rounder could be parachuted into the team to offer some slow bowling while also strengthening the lower order.
However the coach has opted to stick with Bashir, having said previously that he would be his first-choice spinner for the Ashes.
Earlier, Nathan Lyon described Bashir as “decent,” saying that “from my perspective, the experienced spinner is still England’s best spinner.”
“This is a huge responsibility, and it can be a massive challenge for bowlers who haven’t done it in the previous in these conditions,” he remarked of slow bowling in matches Down Under.
“I won't reveal my strategies so opponents perform and excel out here.”
