Ukrainian Forces Hit Russian Oil Refinery With British Storm Shadow Missiles.
As part of a notable military action, Ukrainian forces have employed British-made Storm Shadow missiles to target and hit a major Russian oil refinery. The attack was carried out Thursday, according to the Ukrainian military command.
Details of the Strike and Military Significance
The targeted facility, the Novoshakhtinsk refinery, was reportedly hit, with multiple blasts observed at the site. This represents not the first instance where Ukrainian forces has utilized these powerful British-supplied missiles to hit targets on Russian territory.
Military spokespersons emphasized that the Novoshakhtinsk plant serves as one of the primary suppliers of fuel products in Russia's south and is directly involved in supplying the military of the Russian Federation.
Diplomatic Developments on the Conflict
Separately, Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy stated on Thursday that he held productive discussions with representatives of former US President Donald Trump, including Steve Witkoff and Jared Kushner. The conversation centered on possible ways to bring the conflict to a close.
“We had a really good conversation: many details, good ideas, that we discussed,” Zelenskyy stated on a messaging platform. “There are some new ideas on how to move toward real peace closer, and it concerns formats, potential summits, and, of course, the timeline.”
Judicial Proceedings Inside the Country
In a parallel internal matter, a court in Russia has found guilty a pro-war activist and opponent of Vladimir Putin on charges of supporting terrorist activities. Sergei Udaltsov, head of the opposition movement, was given to six years in a penal colony.
This case are said to be based on an article Udaltsov published in support of another group of Russian activists charged with forming a terrorist organisation. Udaltsov has denied the charges as politically motivated and, following the verdict, reportedly announced to go on a hunger strike in protest.
International Detainee Case
Russian authorities has stated it is in contact with French authorities concerning the fate of Laurent Vinatier, a French researcher currently serving a prison term in Russia and allegedly facing new charges of espionage.
An official stated that Russia has presented a proposal to France in the case of Vinatier, and now “it is in France’s court.” President Emmanuel Macron’s office stated he is monitoring the situation, with all state resources mobilised to provide consular support and push for his liberation at the earliest opportunity.
Symbolic Reconstruction in Occupied City
A theatre in Mariupol, which was destroyed in a devastating bombardment while hundreds of civilians sought refuge in its cellar, is scheduled to reopen. Russian occupation authorities have heralded the reconstruction as a symbol of recovery.
However, former actors from the theatre have called the planned opening as “dancing on bones.” The reconstruction is part of a broader Kremlin effort to showcase its administration in seized territories, a process accompanied by the arrest or exile of critics and confiscation of assets from local residents.
It is expected to open by the end of the month with a performance of a Russian fairytale, following its reconstruction largely anew over the last 24 months.
