UN:Me: A Psychological Horror Merging Survival Horror with Social Deduction Mechanics

The recent Day of the Devs digital showcase unveiled a number of intriguing future games, but one in particular has captured the imagination: UN:Me. Developed by Historia and Shueisha Games, this solo adventure appears to fuse together the oppressive atmosphere of a Silent Hill title with the paranoid deduction heart of Among Us.

"It's a unique experience where a girl containing several human souls within her must escape from a labyrinth of the psyche," states producer Yasukazu Kawai.

Stepping Into a Fractured Mind

In UN:Me, players assume the role of an unnamed heroine who appears to be of high school age. Within her exist four separate personas, each with unique anxieties and motivations. These entities can seize control at will, unleashing their deep-seated phobias upon her suddenly.

Judging by showcased footage, much of the narrative unfolds within a creepy medical facility, while additional clips show the main character exploring a desolate church.

An Environment of Individual Dread

"What makes you afraid of? What causes you uneasy?" poses game director Shun Sasaki. "High places. Small rooms. People in power. Things that seem trivial to others can trigger something primal inside us. This game delves into that concept — anxieties that are unique to each person."

The central gameplay loop involves controlling whichever soul emerges at any given moment. However, these identities will switch involuntarily during gameplay. During exploration, each soul's fears become exaggerated and attack the girl in succession. When the soul changes, so does the particular terror the player encounters.

Eerie Visuals and a Deadly Decision

At first glance, UN:Me displays noticeable visual similarities with the Silent Hill series. The hospital is filled with nurses all sporting the identical visage, with unnervingly wide smiles. Patients in the lobby have enormous blooms where their necks should be. Floral motifs are an ever-present theme, juxtaposing natural beauty with unnatural horror.

Yet, UN:Me introduces a unique twist. Players are tasked with deducing which of the four souls inhabiting the heroine is the "real" one. "All four personas claims that the physical form belongs to them," notes a creator. "During the game, you must determine who is authentic."

After a player believes a persona is fake, they are forced to destroy it. However, because every entity can lie or hide the reality, it is incredibly simple to make a mistake.

"Perhaps you've already eliminated the real [soul] by your own actions," the narration suggests. "The last one remaining could be a fake. Either way, your choices are final."

UN:Me does not yet have a publicly announced launch window, but it is available to wishlist on platforms.
